Now You Know: Body Composition

Updated: Dec 15, 2018

When losing weight, it’s vital to understand your body composition. Body composition is the measure of body fat in relation to lean muscle mass. It is an integral part of the health and nutrition assessment. A balance between body fat and lean mass has been linked to a better overall health. As fat mass increases in comparison to lean mass however, health tends to decline. An altered body composition may lead to complications such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and more. Here at The Mindful Living Institute, our patients use a body composition analysis scale each time they come in for a coaching session. The scale uses technology called bio-electrical impedance analysis to measure body fat. A small, unnoticeable electrical current is sent from one foot, up through the body, and back down to the other leg. Since fat is a poor conductor of electricity compared to other components of the body, the resistance of the current measured is able to help the scale calculate the body fat and lean mass percentage. The scale at our office also provides patients with their hydration levels. Body composition can be a very powerful tool when assessing weight loss progress, which is why The Mindful Living Institute take proper note of it. Your body composition results can help guide us in creating you a personalized diet plan, a schedule for proper exercise, and overall plan to better your health.
